Procedure

Prior to surgery, the areas to be treated will be mapped out on your body by the surgeon. Anesthesia will then be administered either by using general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on how much fat is being removed and the type of liposuction being done. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make small incisions in your skin and insert a suction devise inside the incision, and remove excess fat using a suction pump or a large syringe. How long it will take depends on how much fat is being removed.

Depending on the type of liposuction treatment, you may be able to have it done as an outpatient and go home the same day. If a large amount of fat will be removed, you may need to stay at the hospital overnight.

Risks

All surgery carries some form of risk, however the risks with liposuction surgery are usually minor and infrequent.

Liposuction risks include anesthesia complications, infection and bleeding under the skin. Irregularities in the skin contour and depressions in the skin may occur.
